Advantages of the Motorail service

Sardinia

26th June to 7th July 2008 (11 nights)

2 nights bed & breakfast, 5 nights half-board + 4 nights ferry / motorail

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is formed by a series of ountainous massifs, hills and narrow highlands. The coasts are jagged and rocky , and are interspersed with many marvellous beaches of very fine sand and has countless inlets. Th seaside landscapes, especially on the Costa Smeralda, are among the most beautiful in the world.

In order to get to our chosen destination, after our crossing to Rotterdam, we ride across Holland to s-Hertogenbosch where we board our Motorail train to Italy. With the bikes secured, we relax aboard the trans-continental train, dining together before retiring to our cabins and awaking in Bologna the next day. From here we take the short ride to Pisa for a night before sailing to Sardinia.

We initially base ourselves in our luxury hotel on the east coast, midway down the island, for 3 nights near the sea shore. It is from here that we are able to discover the wonderful mountainous biking roads covering the central region of the island where the road surfaces are great and traffic almost non-existent!

Our second base in Sardinia is located just outside Olbia in a luxury 4**** hotel overlooking the bay (see top pic). Here we base ourselves for 2 nights, allowing us to explore the Costa Smeralda and the northern areas of this beautiful place.

Sardinia is an absolute 'must' for a biker...it's got everything required for that amazing ride...the scenery, the sunshine, the shores and some very empty roads with enough twists and turns to ensure those tyres are well scrubbed!

Reluctantly leaving Sardinia behind, we return to Pisa by ferry for an another overnight stop before hopping aboard our overnight train back to Holland.

Please don't be put off by the motorail - it's a wonderful experience...especially when you are sat in the dining car enjoying your evening meal, with a glass of wine, as we pass the castles of the Rhein Valley at sunset on the way south...amazing!
