Black Forest

11th May to 19th May 2008 (8 nights)

2 nights bed & breakfast, 4 nights half-board, 2 nights overnight crossing.

Discover the special mystique of the Black Forest, or the ‘Schwarzwald’ to give the place its German name. Even as late as the 1920’s much of this area was a rarely penetrated wilderness, forming a refuge for everything from boars to bandits – nowadays, the only bandits around here are made by Suzuki as this area is considered a mecca for the touring motorcyclist.

After our crossing to Zeebrugge and riding through Belgium and Luxembourg, we spend a night near Trier in Germany in a wonderful rural hotel with an excellent restaurant and surrounded by vineyards. After the night’s rest we continue our ride south and into one of the most popular biking regions in Europe - the Black Forest.

The Black Forest is a vast, unspoilt area of pine woods, lakes, mountains and fabulous biking roads. This still very traditional part of Germany is famous for its cuckoo clocks, folk costumes and of course, Black Forest gateaux. The region is also blessed with a particularly rich mythological landscape. It is said to be haunted by werewolves, sorcerers, witches and the devil in differing guises. Helpful dwarves try to balance the scales!

It is here we enjoy 4 nights in the very heart of the Black Forest at one of our excellent biker hotels.

So with 3 full days for riding and exploring the maze of awesome biking roads which criss-cross this vast area, you’ll soon realise you’re in a biker’s paradise. The famous B500 road which virtually runs the length of the Black Forest is a wonderful scenic road with good surfaces and long sweeping bends, some stretches cutting through dense woodland and other sections crossing open plains – a real pleasure to ride.

Other places of interest are the Roman town of Baden-Baden, Triberg with the highest waterfall in Germany, nearby Schonach which claims to house the world’s largest cuckoo clock, the beautiful lake at Titisee or historical Freiburg to name but a few. Our hotel has plenty of information on ride-outs or interesting places to go and visit. The hotel owner, who is a biker and the chef, produces some wonderful food in the hotel restaurant, so each evening after our day’s riding, we can sit down in the hotel restaurant and enjoy a delicious 3 course evening meal washed down later with a few beers in the bar no doubt!
