Information - To avoid confusion Zone

From the 1st Jan 2008, all vehicles (with very few exceptions) entering Berlin's inner city must display a windscreen sticker showing it's emmission class. This is currently NOT required by motorcycles. Only vehicles emitting pollutants at lower levels are allowed in this zone. Vehicles not displaying a sticker in this zone will be fined €40 on the spot. This will become stricter by 2010.

You will see the following sign as you enter the area - currently you can ignore it as an exempt vehicle.

Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, and the Third Reich. After World War II the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became a western enclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989. Now reunified, we now have the chance to visit some of the famous landmarks on both sides of the old divide in this most intriguing of cities.

After our overnight crossing to Rotterdam, our first day’s ride takes us across Holland and into Germany, staying for 2 nights in the picturesque town of Hameln in Lower Saxony, famous for the legend of the Pied Piper. Here we can ride the surrounding Weserbergland mountains or visit the medieval old town where in summer actors re-enact the tragedy that befell the town in 1284.

We then continue eastward to Berlin which is best known for its historical associations as the German capital, for its lively nightlife, for its many cafes, clubs, and bars, and for its numerous museums, palaces, and other sites of historic interest.

Taking a day off the bike, as a suggestion, you may wish to join one of the guided tours of the city (in English) which only costs between €12-€14:

The shortlist of places to visit could include the Allied Museum, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate to name but a few.

Berlin's architecture is quite varied: though badly damaged in the final years of World War II, Berlin has reconstructed itself greatly, and it is now possible to see representatives of many different historic periods in a short time within the compact city centre, from a few surviving medieval buildings near Alexanderplatz, to the ultramodern structures in Potsdamer Platz.

Important Notes:

On this particular tour, the main party will leave from Rotterdam taking an overnight crossing. The Dover - Calais* ferry route is available as priced above. Please note, if you choose to depart from Dover you will make your own way to the first hotel to meet up with the main group and will require a ride of some 380 miles [which is do-able but not recommended]. This Dover crossing will be booked for the morning of the following day (i.e. Fri 1st August 2008), with the return from Calais booked for the evening of the 7th August 2008. This effectively shortens the duration to 6 nights as you have no overnight crossings. *PLEASE NOTE THIS ON THE BOOKING FORM OR IT WILL BE ASSUMED THAT YOU WISH TO TRAVEL WITH THE MAIN PARTY.
